Organizing urban intersections is a complex matter. At the same time, intersections are accident hotspots. This situation will become even more complicated in the future when autonomous vehicles are involved. An Smart Intersection acquires the potentials of stationary location recognition. It records complex traffic conditions in the local dynamic object map and exchanges information between infrastructure and vehicle to compensate for the obstructed vision or restricted horizons of the vehicle's sensors. The Smart Intersection builds on key technologies developed at the Fraunhofer CCIT with the Fraunhofer Institutes AISEC, HHI, IIS und IVI and implemented in demonstrators at the Fraunhofer IVI as the application institute.
