Research focus: Edge-Cloud continuum

Optimized data processing from sensor to cloud

Both decentralized edge computing and centralized cloud computing are seamlessly integrated into the edge-cloud continuum. As such, digitalized industrial processes are used to automatically process data where it makes the most sense in terms of efficiency and economic viability: either in real time at the edge, close to end devices and sensors, or in a scalable manner in centralized data centers.

Researching and developing implementable technology solutions in the field of edge-cloud continuum is the central focus of research at Fraunhofer CCIT. The advantages of edge and cloud computing are combined to create a continuous data space in which computing power is automatically and dynamically shifted as needed, depending on the volume of data and latency requirements.

Our vision: Establish an agile, flexible and digital industry

Competitive digitalization applications, agile production processes and innovative business models require a cognitive Internet for industry. It links the physical world of things with the digital world of data and learning algorithms for highly intelligent services. The cognitive Internet is therefore the key to the digital sovereignty and economic competitiveness of German industry.

With the Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Internet Technologies CCIT, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and its research institutes work on key technologies for the cognitive, industrial Internet. The aim is to establish a viable infrastructure for an agile, flexible and digial industry.

The Fraunhofer CCIT is a network of several Fraunhofer institutes from the fields of microelectronics, information and communication technology and production. The joint research and development work focuses on the technology fields of IoT communication, trusted data rooms and machine learning.
